Student Computing Recommendations
One of the most common questions from incoming and current students is: “What kind of computer should I get?” While there isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer, the Office of Information Technology provides the following guidelines to help you choose a device that best fits your academic and personal needs. Our goal is to ensure that when you arrive at the Abbey, you have reliable access to all university services and resources.
Things to consider when purchasing a new computer
Price range – Computer prices vary widely—from a few hundred to several thousand dollars—depending on the specifications and features. While prices have dropped in recent years, your budget will ultimately determine the type of computer you can afford. Be sure to weigh cost against performance and long-term usability.
Computer Age – We recommend purchasing a device that is no more than three years old to ensure compatibility with current software and security standards. Additionally, it’s strongly advised that your computer has an active warranty that covers your entire time at the Abbey, as the Office of Information Technology (OIT) does not support personal devices due to liability concerns.
Your major – Some academic programs require specific software that may demand higher system performance. For example, business-related courses often involve resource-intensive applications. If you are enrolled in such a major, consider investing in a device with upgraded specifications. We encourage you to consult your department for any program-specific technology requirements before making a purchase.
Apple or Windows – Both Apple (macOS) and Windows computers are acceptable for most university programs. However, certain departments may have a preference due to software compatibility. It’s best to check with your major’s department to see if one platform is recommended over the other.
iPad’s or Chromebooks – While iPads and Chromebooks can be helpful supplemental tools for note-taking, web browsing, or accessing online resources, they are not recommended as a student’s primary computing device. These devices have limited compatibility with many required academic applications.
